We owned a '96 LT4 (nice car) and a 2001 DMBG convertible (fantastic car) which I sold last September ONLY if I could do the plant buyers tour. We have been to the plant on numerous occasions, but never to watch a Corvette with special significance be assembled. We were fortunate to have the plant manager give us a personal tour of the St. Louis plant in 1971. Obviously, there is no comparison.
As it turns out, we ordered a 2010 GS Cyber 4LT convertible last September, 2009. We were at the plant first thing in the morning on October 27th. What an awesome experience. One of the driver side seat belt installers tried to get our attention by installing the wrong color shoulder harness-we didn't fall for it. He eventually put the correct color in. We got a kick out of that. We were very much impressed with the whole process of the Corvette assembly. Everyone was very appreciative of our purchasing a new Corvette while we were thanking them for doing a great job on the assembly line...and they did. The enthusiasm that everyone displayed was amazing. Pride and camaraderie was very prevalent. Everyone seem to work as a team. We can't say enough about the hospitality and friendliness of all the workers on the line. It was an emotional experience for us. Mr. Dave Hastings was our tour guide for three days and he was very knowledgeable of the assembly process and made sure that we knew exactly where our car was on the line at all times. A fork lift operator took a few moments to explain to us how the parts delivery process works.
My wife and I would like to thank each and every person at the plant that made our 2010 Cyber Gray convertible happen and for a truly amazing experience watching our special Corvette be assembled. If you see Dave Hastings around, tell him Walt and Wendy said hello. I could write much more but I'll just say- we'll be back.
When I retired after 39 years of service to the government, I received a picture of the control tower that I worked in with signatures around the picture from all of the employees. It would be a special touch if the Museum could somehow provide a picture of the buyers Corvette along with autographs of all that had a hand in assembling the SPECIAL Corvette.

Thank you all for an amazing, awesome experience,
ONEOWNER6910

Thank you for the THANK YOU!

Thank you for the opportunity to share how we appreciate the men and women who build the Corvette. I would like to start by saying THANK YOU to the men and women of the Bowling Green Assembly Plant.

Last Labor day (2009) We were part of the caravan to the Corvette Museum for the 15th anniversary celebration. A group of us toured the Corvette assembly plant on Friday. What we found out that morning make you proud to be part of the Corvette family.
We had been told that the Corvette assembly plant was only operating Monday thru Thursday, 10 hours a day. The men and women who build the Corvette had decided to take off the Monday before and work that Friday, because THEIR customers were coming to the plant that day and they wanted to show appreciation. Every where we went, signs on the back of forklifts, signs in work areas, some had them on their shirts, that said Thank You. Everyone made you welcome, answered questions and never let us forget how much they appreciated Corvette owners. We had a GREAT day, because of the men and women of the Bowling Green Corvette Assembly plant.
We have owned 5 Corvettes, with our latest a 2007 Monterery Red Convertible. We are planning a trip back to Bowling Green next July and will visit the Corvette Plant again.

Thank you again,
Lee & Carol Ritchey
Murrells Inlet, South Carolina

A Job Very Well Done!

I am pleased to be able to finally express my appreciation to all you good folks who have worked so hard to make such a superior product for us Corvette "nuts".
I have bought 3 new Corvettes over the years, a 1966 425HP Mosport Green convertible (which I still own), a 2002 Electron Blue Z06 (which I also still own), and finally a 2008 Atomic Orange Z06. In addition, I have owned the following used Vettes, two red 1962's and a gold 1969 390HP convertible. Needless to say I have been very happy with them all or I wouldn't keep buying them.
Let me concentrate on the 2002 and 2008 Z06's. My 2002 now has just shy of 40,000 miles and I have had ZERO problems with it. I still look forward to driving it every time since it has a unique "feel" which is quite enjoyable. Even though it is getting a little age on it, I still get a lot of stares and complements when I take it out for a drive. It has been to the 12 hour Sebring race three times and to Bowling Green many times over the years. The 2008 was purchased brand new by me on 08/08/08 (easy to remember) and has proved to be a true "super car" of very high quality.
The engine was assembled by Mr. Greg Jones (great job!!!) and with its unusual Atomic Orange color gets so many compliments I almost take them for granted. It too has been to Sebring (twice) and to Bowling Green several times and now has about 16,000 miles. Again, it has also had ZERO problems.
So in closing, I want to personally thank EVERY worker from start to finish for a job VERY WELL DONE. My wife and I have taken the Plant Tour several times over the years and continue to be amazed at the professionalism and devotion to the job at hand. IT IS APPRECIATED! Even though I turned 68 last month, I am not about to give up on a future purchase or two of new Corvettes since you keep bringing out so many great technical and design innovations. Keep up the good work and your loyal customers will always be there for you.
Thanks again, Jerry Keyes

How about a high performance automatic?

Hello Corvette Customer Feedback UAW Local 2164 First I’m not new to the Corvette world. I’ve been a Corvette owner since the age of 27 (now 40) and have owned three vette’s in that time (currently a 2004 Z51 coupe). I’m a very active member in my local Corvette club and my nation Corvette club. I do take my car to the track once or twice a year, and run a few autocrosses throughout the year.
Now here is my complaint. Why does Gm have problems with people that buy automatics? For personal reason I can only buy an automatic. I noticed over the years any higher performance vette is only offered with a manual transmission. Now I’m interested in the 2011 Grand Sport and notice again if you order it with an automatic transmission you get less of a car.
After paying a higher price for ordering a Corvette with an automatic you DON’T get: the launch control, dry sump oiling system, an engine hand built in Michigan, and Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar GEN2 tires with Magnetic Selective Ride Control. I can understand if GM is incapable of building an automatic for the Z06 and ZR1’s power, but why mess with the Grand Sport.
There are always more automatics sold than manuals every year, and I’m sure the number would be higher if automatics were offered in the Z06 & ZR1’s. If you want to sell more Corvettes’ give us what we want. If I pay $67,000+ for a Corvette I would like it built my way, and not get less of a car just because I ordered an automatic.
Thanks, Joe

Great People making a Great Car

I have owned 2 new Corvettes and can't say enough about the quality and performance of this the greatest American Sports Car ever built. To say the least we were all amazed and overwhelmed!
We started the day with a private tour of the plant – what an experience. Watching the folks that put together our car and build others was not only exciting but was an educational experience. We talked to many of the technicians and were amazed at the enthusiasm of everyone we came in contact with. Overwhelming to say the least!!

My wife and I came up here to take the tour amongst other things. The factory, like many US manufacturing plants, has taken a beating head-count wise, with employment down to around 300 hourly workers from over 900 at one point. Like many employees in this country, the remaining workers are doing a lot more work for the same money. (I feel you; I'm personally working more for less.)
Having said that, I will tell you that every single employee we met today - and we met a LOT - are very, very dedicated to producing a quality product. Everyone. They all did their jobs efficiently and took pride in getting the job done right. We saw many stations where a part was fitted and then the tolerances were checked on the spot, then crosschecked later down the line by at least two others. Door clearances and spacing, hood spacing, alignment of windows, systems checking - the amount of checking, rechecking and crosschecking was very impressive. We personally witnessed a guy with special gloves going over every square inch of the rear fascia, finding a small flaw and correcting it on the spot before it ever got near the rest of the car.
We told many of the workers we spoke with that we own an '07 C6 and how it was mechanically terrific, and you could see their pride. My wife and I came away with a strong feeling that they're really trying to put out a great car here.
The factory was noisy (duh) and it had lots of robotics that were directed/steered/operated by the workers at each station. The factory was also very clean. We didn't see speck one of dirt, trash, papers, nothing. No, it isn't Ferrari clean, but then again they aren't building Ferraris! The line production sequencing was especially amazing; it's fascinating to watch the car go from the frame box to the finished product (which, we were told, takes about 20 hours).
The leak test was impressive. They park the car in what looks like a super duper car wash and blast away for 3 minutes with pressure that would make any self respecting hurricane blush. Inside the car an inspector sits with his/her Surefire looking for leaks.
Everyone we met that was associated with the factory or the Museum was very professional and courteous. They take great pride in building it, and frankly, my wife and I (and many on this forum) take great pride in owning it.
After the tour we met up with Paul (aka Talon90) and his lovely wife Becky for dinner. Paul is nothing short of an expert on all things C6 and we had a great time. Very nice folks.
Great time and HIGHLY worth the trip!

Mike
CorvetteForum.com

Tour sold me on buying a new Vette

I've got 200 miles on my new GS Vert, so far, so good. The first 3 were built in St Louis. My 94 ZR-1 was the first B.G. Vette I owned. I finally gave in and purchased a slightly used 08 ZO6 and I have to say, when I compare quality of build, there simply is no comparison. Of course techniques have improved over time, however, with the recent economic downturn and the tremendous decrease in Vette production as well as the cutbacks at BG, I could understand how factory workers might just take a little less interest in putting these cars together. But instead, all I hear is how well built our favorite sports car is! I’d love to see names of all the worker who helped assemble any given Corvette added to the window sticker, tank sheet or even a new sheet dedicated strictly to those who put the car together. It’s probably an impractical idea, but Corvette people are a different breed and most would love to know everfything about their pride and joy!

Gary Moscowitz
<a href="http://www.corvetteblogger.com/2010/05/24/bowling-green-uaw-local-2164-starts-corvette-customer-feedback-blog/#comments"target="_blank">CorvetteBlogger.com

Corvette is "Best Bang for the Buck"

After owning a variety of early Corvettes, I bought new a 93 Polo Green Conv., 1998 Torch Red Conv., and now a 2010 Torch Red GS Conv.I toured the plant and Museum in 1999 and had a very positive experience there.I have brick in front and our club patch is in a display case. The build quality has always met my expectations and I truly feel the Corvette is the best "Bang for the Buck" you can purchase.
Keep up the fine job.

Ron Lederer
Webmaster for Vintage Corvettes of So. The UAW and General Motors has a unique situation at the assembly plant. To be able to meet the people who assembled our vehicle and watch it from trim to touchdown was truly a one of a kind opportunity. Our guide made us aware of the layoffs and difficulties that the UAW has (and are) going through at this plant. During our three days watching the production of our car many of the workers we came in contact with were out going, courteous, and seemed to be doing an exceptional job. We particularly enjoyed those folks from upstate New York who made it a point to say hi. We think that attitude between the workers and customers can only help to improve brand loyalty. As a contrast, we couldn’t help but notice the people who appeared to be in a management position rarely made eye contact or acknowledged us during our tour. It seems to us that both the UAW and management have a role in promoting the Corvette to the general public during their visits to the plant, whether they are buyers or just taking a tour. This is our third Corvette, but the first new one. Until one can see the complexity involved in building the car it’s impossible to appreciate the job you folks do.
Thanks for a wonderful experience!

Pete and May Pinkerton
Walworth,NY Proud new owners of a cyber grey Grand Sport (almost)
We’ll be back on the 27th to take it home!
